TREX Decking, Expertly Done: Steel Frames, Stunning Finishes, and That Wow-Factor Design
When it comes to outdoor living spaces, few people know TREX® Decking like Shawn Vernon of Home Renovations Colorado. With decades of hands-on experience—from building decks at twelve years old to working directly for TREX®—Shawn brings unmatched expertise to every project. In this conversation, he shares what makes TREX® stand out, the latest design trends in decking, and how smart framing and finishes create a deck that’s as durable as it is beautiful.
You’ve been in the renovation business a long time. How does that experience shape your approach to decking?
It’s because I’ve been in the business so long that I can really describe the differences—what has knots, what doesn’t, what’s worth investing in. From a kitchen standpoint, a deck is no different. It’s about details and doing it right. Years ago, I looked at what we were doing and realized we were putting 25-year boards on wood frame structures that wouldn’t last nearly as long. That didn’t make sense. So I designed a steel framing system that does. It doesn’t rust, it’s dimensionally stable, and the floor stays perfectly flat. Six months down the road, it still looks great—and it’s only marginally more expensive.
Tell me about your experience with TREX®. You go way back with them.
I do. I actually sold my company to TREX and then worked for them for eight years. I know every bit of their product and process—I even helped write some of their installation guides for framing and deck boards. I also developed aluminum railings that are still on the market today. Working for TREX was one of the best experiences of my career. They’re a fantastic company that stands behind their warranty, period. In manufacturing, things can happen, but TREX will pull a product from the market and buy it all back from dealers if there’s an issue. Not many companies do that. That commitment is why I’m such a big fan of their product.
TREX® decks cost a little more up front. How do you help homeowners think about that investment?
It’s true—they’re a bit more expensive initially. But in the long run, they save you money. There are other companies like Decorators and Fortress stepping up in price point, but what matters most is how TREX backs their product. If there’s ever an issue, they make it right. That’s peace of mind that’s worth paying for.
What design trends are you seeing in decking right now?
The industry has shifted a lot. I started building decks with my dad when I was twelve—back then, it was all redwood and big, chunky posts. Today, people want open views. Sleek aluminum railings are huge, especially in black, paired with gray, multi-chromatic deck boards that have beautiful streaking. TREX’s ® “Foggy Wharf” is one of our best sellers—it’s a soft gray with black streaks that complements most home exteriors. Minimalist, modern, and neutral—it fits almost any style, from farmhouse to contemporary.
What about deck features—what’s popular or adds the most impact?
Lighting. Hands down. It makes the deck. Whether it’s post-cap lights, stair lighting, or rail lighting, it completely transforms the space. I can’t explain it—when we flip that switch with the homeowners standing there, the smiles say it all. It’s a small investment that adds huge value.
If you’re spending around $30,000 on a deck, another $1,500 for lighting turns it into what feels like a $40,000 deck. It’s the finishing touch, like the shoes that make the outfit. A lot of clients don’t think about lighting until I bring it up, but once they see examples, they’re all in.
Beyond lighting, what other features are people adding?
Outdoor kitchens and fire pits are popular, but those are often patio-based features. On decks, people usually choose high-end barbecues or freestanding fire pits. The real design magic is in the deck shape—clipped corners, curves, or levels that make the layout unique. And when it’s all tied together with the right lighting and railing, the end result has that “wow” factor.
What’s the most rewarding part for you?
Seeing that “wow” moment. When the lights come on and the homeowners see their finished deck for the first time, that’s everything. It’s gratifying to know the design, materials, and craftsmanship all came together to create something they’ll enjoy for years.
