Interview with Shawn Vernon, Owner | Home Renonvations Colorado
If you’ve ever worried that adding a covered deck might block your view, this project proves it doesn’t have to. This custom deck build in the Bell Mountain area just south of Castle Rock was all about maximizing breathtaking views while still creating a functional, year-round outdoor living space. With thoughtful engineering, custom details, and a mix of materials that tie perfectly into the home, this project is a great example of how the right design makes all the difference.
Where was this deck project located and when did you complete it?
This one was a few years back in the Bell Mountain area just south of Castle Rock. The views out there are stunning, and that really drove the entire design of the deck.
What made this custom deck design unique?
The biggest thing was keeping the deck as open as possible from column to column. We used a very large beam to eliminate obstructions—this opening was around 24 to 25 feet wide. That took a lot of planning and engineering because the homeowner didn’t want to lose any of that view from the deck.
We also incorporated brick columns that support the deck from below and extend up to just above railing height. On top of those, we used fiberglass round columns to support the roof. It gives the deck a really unique look.
How did you design the layout of this deck with both covered and open areas?
The deck runs the full length of the back of the house, but only part of the deck is covered. The rest is open, so they get both shade and sun depending on how they want to use the space.
On one side of the deck, the homeowner was okay with giving up a little bit of the view to add a fireplace. We installed an electric fireplace, and those actually produce great heat, especially during the winter months.
We matched all the brick on the deck to the home by taking a sample and finding the exact color and style so everything blends together.
What materials and structure did you use for this deck?
The framing on this deck is steel, which gives it long-term durability and strength. The decking is TREX with hidden clips, so you don’t see any fasteners.
For the covered portion of the deck, we went with a natural wood look on the ceiling, which adds a lot of warmth. We also installed can lighting throughout the deck so they can use it comfortably at night.
Can you talk about the custom railing on this project?
The railing on this deck is a custom iron design. The homeowner wanted a vertical baluster look, but very narrow—about a half inch wide—with a decorative top.
I designed the deck based on what he was looking for, put it together on paper, and then we made some adjustments from there. The railing itself is a welded, one-piece structure, not something pieced together on site. Then we had it professionally powder-coated in a bronze finish.
We kept the railing at 36 inches high, which meets code, but also helps preserve the view from the deck.
How do you produce custom deck features like this railing design?
We work with a vendor for custom fabrication. Since it’s welded as one piece, it’s much stronger and gives the deck a cleaner look than standard railing systems.
We carried that same railing design across the entire deck and down the staircase so everything is consistent.
What is your process for designing a custom deck like this for a homeowner?
I really focus on listening to what the homeowner wants out of their deck first. Then I take that and create a design that works structurally and visually.
From there, we go back and forth making adjustments until the deck is exactly what they’re looking for.
This deck is a great example of how you can have it all—covered space, open space, and incredible views—without compromising on design.
